Meeting together to talk about our faith and to learn from others is an important part of our discipleship and one of the ways we grow. In small groups, there is that opportunity to try out our current thoughts in discussion, ask questions, and hear the insights of others. As we get to know each other, so we are able to support one another and share in all sorts of ways.
We have a number of opportunities for people to meet in groups and these are listed below. In addition, there is also our Tuesday Afternoon Fellowship which meets on the church premises once a fortnight. All the groups are open to everyone and would welcome visitors and new members.
Central Woodstock Housegroup
This group meets fortnightly on a Tuesday evening. As with most of the groups, it is ecumenical in nature and includes members from a number of the churches in the town. We meet in members’ homes and this term we are looking at the Beatitudes. For further information, please contact Ian Leck.
Spirituality on Screen
This is the Oxford Methodists' film group and meets once a month at Jonathan's house to watch a film, share food and then discuss the issues raised. People come from many of the Methodist churches in the Oxford Circuit, but Woodstock is particularly well represented, and together we have enjoyed a wide range of films, ranging from light comedies such as Bridget Jones' Diary or Shrek. through to the more serious Pulp Fiction and the harrowing Dogville. We meet on the first Sunday of the month at 5.30pm and everyone is welcome. Why not bring a friend? Further information, along with some previous study guides, can be found on the group's own website.
Thursday Fellowship
The Thursday Fellowship is organised by St Mary's Parish Church and meets in the Parish Church Rooms at 8pm each week. Speakers are invited to talk to the group on selected topics and lead discussion. There is a theme to each term which may be biblical or may explore Christian faith in other ways. Recent topics have included “St John’s Gospel” and “Christian thought and action since the Bible” in which we reflected on a wide selection of Christians ranging from Julian of Norwich to Martin Luther King.
Lent groups
During Lent, Churches Together in Woodstock and Bladon ran a number of combined study groups, each following the same theme. Last year our Lenten study was based on the films "Babette’s Feast" and “The Shawshank Redepmtion” using Hilary Brand's book “The Power of Small Choices” to guide our reflections.
